With a strong pipeline of work driven by repeat business and best-in-class delivery, the firm is poised for continued growth and is now seeking a Chief Accountant to lead financial operations and reporting across the business. This is a key leadership role within a company known for low turnover, collaborative culture, and unwavering commitment to quality, both for clients and employees.


As Chief Accountant, you will oversee the full spectrum of financial operations across multiple interior fit-out projects. Reporting to executive leadership, you will ensure financial accuracy, strong internal controls, compliance, and strategic insights that help drive business performance. The ideal candidate will bring deep construction industry accounting experience, preferably in commercial interiors or tenant improvement projects.


Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Lead all day-to-day accounting operations including AP, AR, GL, and monthly close
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, WIP schedules, and project-level profitability reports
  • Oversee year-end and 6months close, audits, and coordination with external CPA firms

Construction Project Accounting

  • High level review of job costing, budget tracking, billing, and cash flow forecasting
  • Collaborate with project teams to ensure timely billing, change order tracking, and subcontractor compliance
  • Ensure accuracy in AIA billing, retention, and lien waiver processing

Budgeting & Financial Planning

  • Develop and manage annual budgets and quarterly forecasts
  • Analyze financial data and operational trends to provide strategic insights
  • Support pricing, margin analysis, and cost-control strategies across the business
  • Working with banks, lines of credit, positive pay with banks, check payments.

Compliance & Payroll

  • Ensure all accounting practices are compliant with GAAP and construction industry standards
  • Getting timesheets, administrative tasks, data entry heavy
  • Oversee union payroll and certified payroll reporting, as applicable
  • Maintain compliance with local tax, labor, and insurance regulations
  • Experience / knowledge with sales tax, job audits, payroll audits, insurance audits, certified payroll.

Systems & Process Optimization

  • Lead implementation and optimization of ERP software (ideally CMiC or similar construction ERP)
  • Streamline internal financial processes to improve efficiency and accuracy
  • Promote a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred)
  • 12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 5 years in a construction or general contracting environment
  • Strong understanding of construction job costing, AIA billing, and WIP reporting
  • Experience with CMiC
  • Proven leadership experience managing teams and communicating across departments
  • Deep familiarity with NYC construction market and compliance requirements is highly desirable
